Pierpaolo Maurizzi

Pierpaolo Maurizzi owes his musical education to Lydia Projetti, Piero Guarino, and Dario de Rosa.

In 1983, after the success at the J. Brahms competition in Hamburg he has founded the Brahms Trio. From 1998 he is the artistic and musical director of Überbrettl-Ensemble, created for the performance of Peter Stein’s rendition of Pierrot Lunaire by Schönberg.

He took part in courses held by the Trio de Trieste for the Gioventù Musicale di Vicenza, the Accademia Ambrosiana di Musica da Camera in Milan, the Fiesole Scuola di Musica (where he was awarded the ‘ Lions Prize’), the Scuola Superiore di Musica da Camera del Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatrico (where he was awarded a diploma with merit) and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena (merit and honours diploma). Furthermore he has attended seminaries held by Pierre Fournier at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, Franco Gulli and Enrica Cavallo at the RAI in Trieste, and Detlef Kraus at the Kleine Musikhalle in Hamburg for the Johannes Brahms Gesellschaft.

Winner of various national and international competitions, (the Schubert Prize in the Moncalieri Competition, the International Competition of Chamber Music of Caltanissetta, the J.Brahms International Competition in Hamburg....).

He has performed in Italy (Bologna, Milan, Turin, Venice, Rome, Campobasso, Benevento, Bari, Catania, Palermo....), in Europe (Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Brussels, Hamburg, Stuttgart, München, Weimar, Nürnberg, Recklinghausen, Lugano, Nice, Reims, Madrid, Barcellona, Santiago de Compostela, Palma di Majorca, Oporto, Athens, Malta...), in the USA where he made his debut at the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium (at the United Nations Center), followed by performances in Boston and Washington, in Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

In addition to numerous radio recordings for the RAI (works by Beethoven, Berg, Brahms, Dallapiccola, Debussy, De Felice, Dvorak, Casella, Franck, Guarnieri, Mahler, Mosca, Mozart, Ravel Scannavini, Schönberg,), the Swiss RTSI (Works by Brahms, Chiari, Dallapiccola, Schönberg, Schobert, Schumann), the Austrian ORF in Salzburg (works by Ghedini) and the Southern German Radio SDR (works by Caprioli), he has recorded for the record companies Sonoton ProViva in Munich and Bongiovanni in Bologna.

He has collaborated with the pianist and composer Uri Caine, with the pianists Alberto Miodini, Stefano Bezziccheri and Elisabetta Bocchese, the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano, the Dante Quartett des Bayerischen Staatsorchesters, the violinists Kolja Lessing, Rainer Honeck, David Schultheiss, Ivan Rabaglia, Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Lenuta Atanasiu Ciulei, the violists Olga Arzilli and Adrian Mustea, the cellists Yves Savary and Enerico Bronzi, the flutists Mattia Petrilli, Giulio Giannelli Viscardi, Machiko Takahashi, the clarinetist Andreas Schablas, the hornist Thomas Gallart the sopranos Sabina von Walther, Dzenana Mustafic, and Lorna Windsor, the tenor Leonardo de Lisi, the actress Maddalena Crippa. He has recorded for Bongiovanni (Bologna, Italy) and Sonoton ProViva (München, Germany), and for RAI, RTSI, SDR, and ORF. In 2006 he has been invited to conduct the Accademia Neue Musik Bolzano, opening the Biennale Danza in Venezia. He has performed for the first time works by A. Caprioli, A. De Felice, E. Ghezzi, A. Guarnieri, G. Magnanensi, A. Molino, L. Mosca, C. Scannavini, A. Tabechki, and L. Tessaderelli. Within his academic work he has founded and conducts the Chamber Music Ensemble of the Conservatorio A. Boito in Parma. The performances of the Ensemble have seen the partecipation of more than two hundred and fifty young musicians coming from Italy, France, Finland, Norway, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Albania, Canada, Korea, Japan, Chile, Brazil.

He has been a guest performer at many major festivals, including the Wiener-Festwochen,the Bologna Festival, the Ravenna Festival, the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Festival of Brescia and Bergamo, the Cervantino di Guanajuato Festival in Mexico, the Venice Biennale, the Mahler-Woche in Toblach, Aspekte Festival in Salzburg, the Twentieth-century Music Festival in Palermo, Spazionovecento in Cremona, the Mozart Festival of Salsomaggiore, the Autunno Musicale in Como, the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona, Estate Musicale Chigiana in Siena, The Festival delle Nazioni in Città di Castello, the Manaus Festival, the Week of Italian Music in Vienna, the Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen), and concert associations such as the Amici della Musica in Florence, the G.O.G. in Genoa, the RAI concert season in Milan, the Accademia Filarmonica in Rome, the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, the Teatro Regio in Parma, Musica Insieme in Bologna.

In addition to his concert career, he dedicates himself to teaching with great fervor and is professor of the Chamber music course at the A. Boito Conservatory in Parma. Pierpaolo Maurizzi holds master classes in piano and chamber music in Este (Musica a Villa Albrizzi), Trento (Conservatorio Bonporti) Bolzano (Accademia Neue Musik), Castel Sardo, Caldarola, Città di Castello (Festival delle Nazioni)… . His recordings include the Trios by Brüll, Gade, Kirchner, Schumann, the Lieder verschiedener Völker by Beethoven, the complete works for Trio by Casella, and Bruno Walter's version for piano four hands of Mahler's first symphony.
